Everything you need to know

Everything you need to know, or could ever think of needing to know to land your government job. I found government job resumes were harder. There’s a lot involved and am really glad I got this book! I even learned that the government will do direct hires sometimes for Schedule A Hiring Authority and if you attend any of the government job fairs, you can ask the HR people any question that’s been on your mind, here in this forum. I never would’ve found out about these “government job fairs” if it wasn’t for the Jobseeker’s Guide by KT. Also, if you get stuck, as I did, you can just hire her to help you write the resume. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth it. Good luck!

Most informative guide there is for federal jobs

This book (and all the others) offer the best insight into obtaining and progressing in the federal job sector. The knowledge prepares you to be better prepared in writing a federal resume, how to search for jobs, and targeting your resume for the job you want. Very valuable and should be in all career coaches, federal job seekers, and college career counselor libraries, as well as for those that work with military and the community of people looking for jobs.

I have always thought that some of the two least fun activities in the world are 1) dating and 2)

This is the OUTSTANDING resource that finally helped me crack the code of the federal job system and application process. The book lays out (in the clearest way possible) the steps and required applicant actions for the GS system and federal hiring process. As a vet, though I consider myself fairly capable of navigating regulations and processes (as per the military), I still find the civilian job system absolutely bewildering. This edition was very helpful in de-mystifying everything that needed to happen on my end. Though I am a fan of Troutman’s earlier books as well, this 8th edition I found to be the most comprehensive and motivating in creating and then polishing my federal resume to the point I was now getting referred to interviews!

I have always thought that some of the two least fun activities in the world are 1) dating and 2) the federal job process… This book makes one of them a heck of a lot easier and equips you with concrete advice for success. “If you know the rules of the game, you can win”… the 8th Ed. spells it out cleanly for you. I highly recommend it to make the journey to the right GS position less of a slog and more of a hopeful reality!

Ms Troutman is the guru of navigating federal job applications

Ms Troutman is the guru of navigating federal job applications! Her well-crafted advice and insight will give you an edge in this often misunderstood process. I’ve used her process when working as a career coach to assist transitioning military members, military spouses and new graduates as well as in retooling my own federal resume. Success speaks louder than words. Using Ms Troutman’s insight, qualified job seekers previously struggling with the federal job system, get referrals, interview and receive multiple federal job offers. Although I’ve been in the federal system for years, using tactics Ms Troutman highlights, I was offered and accepted a leadership position with my dream agency.

Guest ★★★★★

My recent review of both the FEDERAL RESUME GUIDEBOOK, 8TH Ed. and TEN STEPS TO A FEDERAL JOB, Jobseekers Guide 10th Ed. clearly indicate why The Resume Place and Kathryn Troutman are recognized as the leading expert in how to effectively apply and secure federal employment. The manuals detail step-by-step procedures on how to prepare and submit resumes which get Human Resources (HR) attention and results oriented. I especially like how the manuals offer current and up-to-date information on recent legislative changes regarding the Office of Personnel (OPM)New Merit Hiring practices which restrict resumes to a 2-page limit. The manuals offer sage guidance to applicants who bring diverse experiences from state, federal, corporate or armed forces on how to navigate the federal hiring process effectively. The manuals speak directly to the importance of using KEY WORDS and COMPETENCIES which significantly aid HR in the review process to swiftly identify “Best Qualified” candidates who meet the agency’s needs. The section on documenting PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS is brilliant – it clearly provides HR and hiring agency a direct indicator of future performance. Also emphasized is the importance of editing the document for Maximum impact and presenting a reader-friendly document, so HR does not have to rifle through a very busy, unorganized document for information which, more than likely, HR would not do. These updated manuals make it painfully easy on how to outline and format a resume which speaks directly to a vacancy announcement and agency needs. Kathryn, I am eternally grateful to you for the assistance and sage guidance you provided me after I retired from the military service and went on to secure and complete a successful career in the federal government.
