“A comprehensive guide to crafting impactful 2-page federal resumes, emphasizing keyword integration, accomplishment storytelling, and strategic formatting to enhance job seekers’ chances in the competitive federal job market. Federal Resume Guidebook, 8th Edition is an essential compass for the new federal job market.  This manual isn’t just an update; it’s a vital overhaul, designed to guide candidates through the turbulent transition from verbose, traditional federal resumes to the sharp, targeted format demanded by the modern USAJOBS Talent Portal.

The Guidebook excels by providing concrete, actionable strategies for maximizing content within the severe 2-page limit. Troutman doesn’t just tell you what to do; she shows you how. The inclusion of before-and-after examples vividly illustrates the transformation from clunky long-form documents to the streamlined, impactful resumes that HR recruiters can quickly scan.”

Reddit Review: 9/18/24:The best resource I’ve found is this book: Federal Resume Guidebook By Kathryn Troutman. I spent a week using this as a guide and I’m going through the resources it offered to write my resume. It also gives you tips on how to use the job announcements to help write you resume and using OPM resources as well.”

Without having experience from any other kind of employment course, I enjoyed this very much. When I was prepping to apply for my current federal job back in 2019, I took a class given by KansasWorks and was provided the Federal Resume Guidebook. Even then without knowing Kathryn or much about anything related to federal jobs, I found it to be extremely helpful and have been recommending it to clients ever since! My original book from that class has all kinds of highlighted areas, sticky notes, written notes. It is such a great program. I attribute my success in getting my application to be forwarded to using that Federal Resume Guidebook!

My recent review of both the FEDERAL RESUME GUIDEBOOK, 8TH Ed. and TEN STEPS TO A FEDERAL JOB, Jobseekers Guide 10th Ed. clearly indicate why The Resume Place and Kathryn Troutman are recognized as the leading expert in how to effectively apply and secure federal employment. The manuals detail step-by-step procedures on how to prepare and submit resumes which get Human Resources (HR) attention and results oriented. I especially like how the manuals offer current and up-to-date information on recent legislative changes regarding the Office of Personnel (OPM)New Merit Hiring practices which restrict resumes to a 2-page limit. The manuals offer sage guidance to applicants who bring diverse experiences from state, federal, corporate or armed forces on how to navigate the federal hiring process effectively. The manuals speak directly to the importance of using KEY WORDS and COMPETENCIES which significantly aid HR in the review process to swiftly identify “Best Qualified” candidates who meet the agency’s needs. The section on documenting PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS is brilliant – it clearly provides HR and hiring agency a direct indicator of future performance. Also emphasized is the importance of editing the document for Maximum impact and presenting a reader-friendly document, so HR does not have to rifle through a very busy, unorganized document for information which, more than likely, HR would not do. These updated manuals make it painfully easy on how to outline and format a resume which speaks directly to a vacancy announcement and agency needs. Kathryn, I am eternally grateful to you for the assistance and sage guidance you provided me after I retired from the military service and went on to secure and complete a successful career in the federal government.

Received your book (thank you for your coordinating efforts), read it cover to cover, and utilized the examples you sent, to create the 2-page rèsumè. Definitely a different thought process needed to be applied when creating this document and your book outlined everything wonderfully. Not to mention, the examples helped establish the skeleton in-which needed to be used.

As a Federal employee for 15 years, I was amazed to learn of the 2-Page Federal Resume requirement on May 29, 2025. I was so glad to see Kathryn Troutman’s book with the 2-page Federal Resume Samples. THANK YOU Kathryn for the samples. I have been able to adjust / edit / format my 14-page resume down to 2 pages with your samples and insight. And I did use your AI Keyword approach for the keywords for my target position. Thank you and I HIGHLY recommend this book to all Federal employees working on their 2-Page Federal Resume. Thankful Current Federal Employee Seeking a Promotion.

If you are posting resumes on USA Jobs without consulting any of Kathryn Troutman’s books, you’re wrong. I have reviewed thousands of resumes for hundreds of vacancies in my 30 years of federal service. The majority of resumes I receive are horrible, and a waste of my time as a hiring official. Many applicants still use formats abandoned decades ago. I can narrow down 150 applicants to 10 interviews in less than an hour just based on resume format and content. The expectations for GS-5 through GS-15 resumes are slowly migrating to the SES requirements of a 5-page resume based on the ECQs using CCAR paragraphs. If you have been applying for government jobs without success and do not understand that last sentence, then this book will solve your problem.

I began using the same standards when I was asked to assist human resources in reviewing resumes. Since then, I have had a 95% referral success rate and usually get an interview.
