Without having experience from any other kind of employment course, I enjoyed this very much. When I was prepping to apply for my current federal job back in 2019, I took a class given by KansasWorks and was provided the Federal Resume Guidebook. Even then without knowing Kathryn or much about anything related to federal jobs, I found it to be extremely helpful and have been recommending it to clients ever since! My original book from that class has all kinds of highlighted areas, sticky notes, written notes. It is such a great program. I attribute my success in getting my application to be forwarded to using that Federal Resume Guidebook!
My recent review of both the FEDERAL RESUME GUIDEBOOK, 8TH Ed. and TEN STEPS TO A FEDERAL JOB, Jobseekers Guide 10th Ed. clearly indicate why The Resume Place and Kathryn Troutman are recognized as the leading expert in how to effectively apply and secure federal employment. This book helped me land a job. It really simplified an overwhelming process into something digestible and doable.
If you are posting resumes on USA Jobs without consulting any of Kathryn Troutman’s books, you’re wrong. I have reviewed thousands of resumes for hundreds of vacancies in my 30 years of federal service. The majority of resumes I receive are horrible, and a waste of my time as a hiring official. Many applicants still use formats abandoned decades ago. I can narrow down 150 applicants to 10 interviews in less than an hour just based on resume format and content. The expectations for GS-5 through GS-15 resumes are slowly migrating to the SES requirements of a 5-page resume based on the ECQs using CCAR paragraphs. If you have been applying for government jobs without success and do not understand that last sentence, then this book will solve your problem.
I began using the same standards when I was asked to assist human resources in reviewing resumes. Since then, I have had a 95% referral success rate and usually get an interview.
